A swim suit might not be at the top of your packing list when travelling to Iceland, but the local, naturally-heated swimming pools are the center of the Icelandic social scene. This is where gossip and news is exchanged while bodies are warmed and relaxed.

The Blue Lagoon: This unique spa features a huge outdoor lagoon filled with geothermal hot water. The water’s active ingredients are comprised of natural mineral salts, white silica and blue-green algae. The silica mud is accessible in the lagoon to use on the face and body, leaving the skin soft and delicate.…read more. Although the lagoon may look like something born from Iceland’s otherworldly landscape, it´s actually man-made. Set amidst a dramatic field of black basalt lava, the turquoise-blue mineral-rich waters are the run-off from a nearby geothermal project with temperatures in this stunning lagoon averaging a relaxing 35-40°C.

The Golden Circle Tour

7 hours – lunch included

The Golden Circle is Iceland’s most popular sightseeing tour and usually it has three stops. It is the perfect day tour from Reykjavik as in one day you‘ll get to see a magnificent waterfall, the site of the world’s oldest parliament and the hot spring area of the famous Geysir and the sprouting geyser Strokkur.

Thingvellir National Park, is the national shrine of Iceland. Aside from being a beautiful nature area this is also the where the world’s first parliament met and the birth place of Icelandic democracy.

Thingvellir National Park is the only place in the world where tectonic plates can be seen above sea level – it is an amazing feeling to have one foot literally on the American tectonic plate and the other on the European one.

Next stop is at the Geysir hot spring area, one of the greatest natural attractions in Iceland. The area sits on top of a vast, geothermal field with bubbling multicolored mud and steam rising up from hot streams and springs.

All geysers in the world are named after the original Geysir found here. Geysir is now a dormant geyser but another geyser, Strokkur, erupts every 10 minutes or so and its white column of boiling water and steam can reach heights of up to 20-30 meters.

A few minutes’ drive away from Geysir is Gullfoss, or the Golden Waterfall. The glacial White River thunders down a 32-meter drop into an impressive canyon. On a sunny day you can often see a rainbow forming in the spray, and in winter the scene is even more breath-taking as part of Gullfoss freezes in spectacular formations.
