Hekla volcano
Hekla volcano was long believed to be the entrance to the Underworld. The mountain is one of the most active volcanoes in Iceland but also a highly popular hiking destination. Thanks to geologists and experts being able to predict Hekla’s activities, we are confidant that Hekla will slumber quietly while we sneak up to the top for a magnificent mountain view
Hekla has often erupted with catastrophic consequences, but in recent decades eruptions have been more low-key.
It wasn’t until 1750 that two intrepid scientists braved the hike to the top of Hekla and, finding no gates to Hell or any witches hanging out, decided to dismiss those theories.
